Let’s be honest, the only thing that Barack Obama knows about Sputnik is that it was one of the only creations of his beloved communist mentors that he might be able to argue was a success.
The irony meter in your head should have your ears ringing at Obama’s praise of NASA and America’s race into space. No president has done more damage to NASA than Obama. Once a proud institution, under Obama, NASA has been reduced to little more than another big government outreach program to Muslims. Under Obama, it’s Mission Mecca, not Mars.
Chris Horner, senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, writing at Daily Caller brings Don Quixote Obama’s Sputnik-chasing green energy hokum down to earth in a piece entitled, “On energy policy, Obama talks down to Americans“.
Horner reminds the reader of the long history of so-called green technologies, and the political fantasies that have gone along with them.
“…Folks, you are being treated like infants — while you are being robbed. Windmills and solar panels are not “innovative”; they exist only because some politicians have made icons of them and are wedded to them as a result.
These technologies aren’t new. Wind-powered electricity was commercialized in 1891. Solar cells were patented in 1888. The modern solar cell was created in 1954. In 1978, Jimmy Carter vowed to increase solar cell subsidies, supported by promises that solar cells would provide 20% of our electricity by 2000. Solar still provides just a fraction of one percent of it. So close! And solar gets three pitches in the 2011 State of the Union address as if it’s some breakthrough waiting to happen. Sigh.” (whole thing >>)
In his snoozer of a SOTU speech, Obama fell back on his usual dissembling array of platitudes and duplicity, saying:
“Now, clean energy breakthroughs will only translate into clean energy jobs if businesses know there will be a market for what they’re selling. So tonight, I challenge you to join me in setting a new goal: by 2035, 80% of America’s electricity will come from clean energy sources. Some folks want wind and solar. Others want nuclear, clean coal, and natural gas. To meet this goal, we will need them all — and I urge Democrats and Republicans to work together to make it happen.”
First of all, notice he left out oil. Oil is bad. Oil is even more evil than Sarah Palin. Of course, no economy in the world could run one minute without oil, but it’s a no-no.
Still, Obama says we need all forms of energy (except oil). Who doesn’t and hasn’t been saying that ever since the Marxist-inspired ‘Earth Day‘ over 40 years ago? Yet, it is Obama himself who is closing down coal plants, blocking drilling, and making sure no nuclear power plants are built.
He says he’s setting a new goal, that “by 2035, 80% of America’s electricity will come from clean energy sources.”
Who is he kidding? Anyone in the energy business will tell you that with all the strangulating regulations that Liberals have wrapped around the hands of energy producers of any kind, it would almost take to 2034 before a single shovel could hit the dirt.
As proof, one need look no further than California. I recently posted about the environmentalcases there having put the kibosh on one of Don Quixote Obama’s beloved solar schemes. Yes, it is his own Liberal fruitcakes who are tilting at the erection of windmill or solar farms.
Obama’s energy policy is a scam and pure junk science. Be it the pushing of the fallacy of man-made global warming, or the superiority of wind and solar over oil, coal, or nuclear energies, his policies are meant to enrich his corporate buddies like General Electric, and put the rest of us in a poor house that lacks both heating and air-conditioning.
Finally, how is Obama going to achieve this Utopian vision of his? Why, by massive “investments”, Orwellian-speak for hundreds of billions in new spending, which mean borrowing, as America is broke, and the creating a generation of green rocket scientists, just like himself and Al Gore. This means even more untold billions down the education toilet that our feckless, factories of dumb have become.
As Michelle Malkin writes, “Obama’s fiscal year 2011 budget already represents “one of the largest increases” in federal education spending history, and hikes total discretionary spending to nearly $51 billion. Toss in another $35 billion for mandatory Pell grants. And add another $4 billion for the illusory “Race to the Top” charade to improve academic standards.”
How did America ever manage to invent the 21st century without all that government spending back in the 1950s and 60s? It’s a mystery.
American schools at the time of Sputnik were far superior than those of today, at least when it came to learning, which should be, but isn’t, the number one priority of schools.
And, they achieved what they did without the bazillions of dollars spent on them since. Those teachers and schools of the 50s and 60s were able to launch America into the space and computer age, and they did so with slide rulers and pencils. Today’s schools are more concerned with launching a student’s self-esteem and making sure that students are kept clear from bake sales than they are about reading and math.
